Hammond backs Top Gear return and wishes new Grand Tour presenters luck

Richard Hammond has expressed optimism about a potential Top Gear revival while extending well wishes to the incoming presenters of The Grand Tour ahead of his cameo appearance.

The television personality, who is 56 years old, suggested that motoring programming still has a meaningful place in broadcasting and indicated openness to participating in a revived Top Gear.

Reports have suggested that comedian Jimmy Carr could be joining a potential reboot of the programme.

In conversation with the Metro, Hammond discussed the lasting appeal of the BBC series, which he originally led alongside Jeremy Clarkson and James May.

Hammond indicated that automotive programmes have value in celebrating the significance of cars both historically and going forward.

He also expressed support for the continuation of The Grand Tour, the programme he co-hosted with Clarkson and May after departing from Top Gear.

The three presenters are scheduled to appear together alongside the new presenting line-up of James Engelsman, Thomas Holland and Francis Bourgeois.

Hammond suggested that his own involvement had run its natural course and expressed confidence that the programme could thrive with fresh talent.

Regarding other projects, Hammond revealed he would be receptive to returning to Total Wipeout under the right circumstances, describing his affection for the format.

Addressing Top Gear’s cultural significance, Hammond stated that contributing to a programme that became so widely recognised had proved deeply gratifying.

He noted that the show’s initial ambition was simply to create an automotive programme, and its expansion into a phenomenon no one anticipated had been a remarkable experience.

Hammond mentioned that interactions with viewers who grew up watching the series provided considerable satisfaction.

He explained that hearing from people who began watching during their childhood proved particularly meaningful, even if such conversations occasionally made him acutely aware of the passage of time as those viewers had become adults themselves.

During the interview, Hammond also discussed his daughter Izzy Hammond’s accident in a Formula E vehicle earlier this year.

The 25-year-old struck a barrier at the Jeddah circuit but was uninjured.

The incident prompted comparisons with Hammond’s own serious crash in 2006 while filming Top Gear, when he lost control of a jet-powered dragster travelling at close to 300 miles per hour.

Hammond acknowledged feeling somewhat uneasy observing from the sidelines.

He explained that parental instinct drove his concern, though he remained supportive of her pursuing her chosen path.

She is establishing her own professional direction, and he intends to observe and encourage her progress.
