Reform UK politician visits Oxfordshire village over asylum housing plans

A Reform UK representative visited an Oxfordshire settlement where he claimed the area represents the epicentre of migration pressures facing the country.

Zia Yusuf, a senior figure within Nigel Farage’s political movement, shared multiple video recordings from Piddington, a community of approximately 350 inhabitants at the centre of controversy regarding the accommodation of asylum seekers.

The dispute centres on Home Office proposals to accommodate as many as 1,250 individuals at an decommissioned Ministry of Defence facility adjacent to the Oxfordshire parish.

The initiative, unveiled during the current year as authorities aim to reduce reliance on hotel accommodation for asylum seekers, has generated significant opposition from local inhabitants.

Residents have highlighted concerns regarding safety, with the parish council even arranging a ballot on the community’s potential withdrawal from the United Kingdom as a form of protest.

Yusuf visited the settlement on Saturday, August 29, engaging with numerous local residents during his time there.

He stated that Piddington represents the focal point of national migration challenges, describing it as a small community of roughly 350 people where the prime minister is relocating over a thousand individuals.

He reported that conversations with inhabitants revealed widespread anxiety, with mothers enrolling themselves and their daughters in self-protection courses and a parent expressing concern that his child’s youth had effectively concluded.

He noted that those accommodated would not be held in custody but would instead have freedom of movement throughout the area, fundamentally altering the demographic balance between female and male residents almost immediately.

He described the situation as a profound abandonment of local communities by national authorities.

The representative recalled that the prime minister had pledged, shortly after assuming office, to grant local populations greater agency over their own circumstances and to distribute decision-making powers more broadly.

He questioned why such measures were being imposed upon communities under these circumstances.

According to the parish council, numerous requests for dialogue with governmental bodies have been unsuccessful despite near-unanimous disapproval of the proposals within the settlement.

The prime minister had previously indicated an intention to address concerns raised by Piddington residents.

He subsequently observed that communities with greater resources should accept their portion of refugees and those seeking asylum, noting that concentrating such populations exclusively in economically disadvantaged areas was unsustainable, and that all regions should contribute to the national effort.
