16-year-old from Didcot charged with terrorism offences

Published on

A 16-year-old from Didcot, Oxfordshire, has been indicted by officers from the specialist counter-terrorism division following his detention last Thursday.

The youth was apprehended on March 12 and subsequently charged on the evening of March 18.

The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised multiple counts encompassing terrorism-related legislation.

Two charges relate to the circulation of terrorist material under the provisions of the Terrorism Act 2006.

Three further charges accuse the defendant of holding items with suspected terrorist intent under section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Additional counts reference the possession of material potentially useful to those planning terrorist activity under section 58 of the same legislation.

An additional charge alleges the young person failed to comply with obligations imposed under section 49 of the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000, contrary to section 53 of that Act.

The accused was ordered to remain in custody pending his appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on March 19.

Due to his status as a minor, reporting restrictions prevent identification of the defendant.

Under existing statutory guidance, distributing content that promotes terrorism or details methods for carrying out attacks constitutes an offence under the 2006 Act.

The legislation covering possession of suspected terrorist items criminalises holding property where circumstances indicate connection to the planning, initiation, or execution of terrorist acts.

The section addressing possession of terrorist-relevant documentation makes it unlawful to hold, gather, or stream records likely to assist those engaged in terrorism.

The regulatory framework also empowers designated officials to compel production of protected electronic data, including device access codes, in a readable format when investigating national security concerns.
