A collision on the M40 brought significant disruption to drivers on Saturday, August 29, occurring close to the boundary separating Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

The incident took place on the southbound stretch of the motorway in the late morning hours, specifically between the exits for Lewknor at Junction 6 and Watlington at Junction 5.

Emergency responders arrived at the location and authorities shut the highway.

National Highways indicated that two of the three available lanes were blocked while personnel worked at the scene, creating hold-ups of approximately 40 minutes.

Additional problems stemmed from unrelated lane restrictions in both carriageways between Junctions 4 and 5, implemented after the central barrier sustained damage during a previous occurrence.

Queues formed on the routes leading toward the crash site, with surrounding communities such as Stokenchurch and Lewknor also experiencing the fallout from the disrupted traffic flow.

Surveillance footage from traffic monitoring cameras captured substantial lines of vehicles and emergency responders operating at the location throughout the afternoon period.

According to AA Travel, maintenance work necessitated the closure of a single lane on the northbound section between Handy Cross and Stokenchurch.

National Highways subsequently announced that all southbound lanes between Junctions 6 and 5 had been restored to traffic and that the restrictions connected to the earlier incident were also in the process of being lifted.

Although the motorway had reopened, residual queues of roughly 40 minutes persisted on the approach as conditions gradually normalised.
