Equality roadshow to visit seven Oxfordshire market towns this autumn

Published on

Two Oxfordshire district authorities have announced a series of visits to market towns across their areas this autumn, with the aim of raising awareness of equality initiatives and council services available to residents.

South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils will travel to seven different locations between September and October, beginning in Abingdon on Monday, September 7.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to engage communities and demonstrate how the authorities support inclusive environments through their various programmes.

The visiting team will provide details on getting active locally, support for disabled residents, assistance with waste collection services, and broader information about council operations.

Among the schemes to be showcased are Move Together and YouMove, delivered through the councils’ Active Communities department.

Guidance on financial assistance for disabled individuals will also be offered.

A spokesperson for South Oxfordshire District Council outlined the purpose of the visits, noting that equality encompasses a broad range of considerations affecting residents in different ways.

The representative emphasised the importance of ensuring services remain accessible and equitable, and that local people understand the support mechanisms available to them.

Residents have been invited to attend and speak directly with council officers at the various venues.

The schedule includes stops at Abingdon Market on September 7 between 8am and 3pm, Didcot Market on September 12 from 9am until 2pm, Wantage Market on September 16 between 8am and 3pm, and Wallingford Market on September 25 from 9am until 2pm.

Further visits will take place at Faringdon Market on October 6 between 8.30am and 1pm, Thame Market on October 13 from 8am until 2.30pm, and Henley Market on October 22 between 9am and 2pm.

A representative from Vale of White Horse District Council expressed satisfaction at being able to return with the roadshow following the success of previous years.

The official noted that previous events had proven valuable in helping residents and local businesses understand the support available, and indicated the sessions would serve both to inform and to listen to concerns from community members.

Whether someone requires assistance due to a disability, needs guidance on council processes after relocating, or simply wishes to discuss a local matter, the roadshow was described as an opportunity for two-way dialogue.

The council’s services were highlighted as being available to all residents.

Earlier this year, both councils renewed their pledges to maintain welcoming and inclusive environments for everyone in their districts, in response to the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s updated code of practice guidance issued earlier in 2024.
