Britain’s domestic intelligence agency has opened applications for an eight-week paid summer placement in 2027.

The programme provides university students with practical experience in national security work.

Successful candidates will undertake the placement at MI5 facilities located in Central and West London.

The opportunity runs from Monday, June 28 through Friday, August 20, 2027.

Participants receive compensation of £4,849 alongside accommodation costs.

Working arrangements consist of 36 hours per week, structured as Monday to Friday shifts between 9am and 5pm.

The initiative represents an entry point for individuals considering whether intelligence work might constitute a future career path.

Those accepted will not observe passively from the sidelines.

Instead, the programme incorporates direct involvement in genuine operations and contributions to active projects.

The experience commences with two weeks of specialist instruction introducing participants to the agency’s operations.

Following this introductory phase, participants integrate into investigative units to gain firsthand experience of intelligence officer responsibilities.

The placement concludes with access to the agency’s formal development programme for intelligence officers.

The arrangement incorporates four paid days off.

Eligibility extends to students completing either their concluding or penultimate year of university study during the 2026/27 academic cycle.

Candidates must additionally belong to a black, Asian, mixed heritage or other ethnic minority background and demonstrate originating from a socially or economically disadvantaged background.

The agency has identified that these demographic groups remain underrepresented within its current workforce.

The selection process seeks individuals motivated by honesty, consideration, inventiveness, professional conduct and a commitment to benefiting the United Kingdom.

Desirable attributes include natural curiosity, ability to collaborate effectively, genuine eagerness, aptitude for addressing intricate challenges and dedication to national protection.

The opportunity is facilitated through collaboration with the Government Communications Headquarters.

Applicants must hold British nationality.

Those possessing dual nationality that includes a British component remain eligible for consideration.

Should selection occur, individuals would not typically be required to relinquish their non-British nationality.

However, conditions regarding assignments, work-related travel and exercise of that nationality may be imposed.

Generally, candidates must have resided within the United Kingdom for at least seven of the preceding ten years.
