Man, 31, denies trying to kill pedestrian with car in Oxford after brawl

Published on

A violent confrontation erupted on the streets of Oxford, leaving one man with serious injuries after a vehicle struck him during what witnesses described as a deliberate attack.

The incident on St Clement’s Street resulted in Rabar Pirot requiring treatment for a broken leg and head injuries after his head struck the vehicle windscreen.

The court heard the driver first struck the victim before reversing the car in an apparent attempt to run him over a second time.

According to testimony given at Oxford Crown Court, the assault followed a disturbance that had occurred earlier the same morning outside Hank’s Bar on Queen Street.

Pirot had travelled from elsewhere to meet acquaintances including Alan Mohammadi, who became involved in a separate altercation with a group of Albanian nationals during the early hours.

Shapol Mohammed, who was present when the driving incident occurred, described how the group was walking along the pavement when a car approached at speed.

Mohammed stated that Mohammadi identified the driver, explaining he belonged to the group responsible for attacking him the previous night.

Both Mohammadi and Pirot were struck as the vehicle collided with them.

The car then reversed and headed directly toward Pirot before bystanders intervened to pull him clear of danger.

Mohammed told the jury that members of the crowd responded by throwing objects at the vehicle.

Meanwhile, Romario Qatja, who resides at Pipkin Way in Oxford, faces multiple charges in connection with the incident.

The 31-year-old has been indicted on counts of causing serious injury through dangerous driving, affray, wounding with intent, and the attempted murder of Pirot.

All pleas entered have been not guilty.

Separate proceedings have arisen from the earlier brawl.

Several men stand accused of carrying weapons on the same date as both confrontations.

Samyan Khdir, aged 21 from Poplar High Street in London, faces a charge of possessing an offensive weapon, specifically a sword, on Rectory Road.

Eyub Hussani, 25, from Warley Avenue in Dagenham, is charged with possessing an offensive weapon, described as a long piece of wood, at the same location.

Additional defendants facing affray charges include Gabriel Dos Santos, 28, from Richmond Road in Oxford; Arger Poleshi, 20, who has no fixed address; and Armanto Tzourtzi, 24, also of no fixed address.

Indrit Ndoj, 35, from St Martins Road in Oxford, and Fiqiri Noka, 27, from Mogridge Drive in Oxford complete the group facing affray allegations.

Not guilty pleas have been entered on behalf of Tzourtzi, Poleshi, Noka, Ndoj and Dos Santos to the affray charges.

Khdir and Hussani have both denied the weapons possession allegations.

Proceedings remain ongoing at Oxford Crown Court.
