A major planning document for Cherwell has progressed past a critical stage in its formal review.

The Planning Inspector has given approval for the Cherwell Local Plan Review 2042 to proceed through the examination phase, representing a notable advancement for the district’s future development approach.

The document outlines proposals for expansion, transport links, and ecological preservation throughout Cherwell, having been developed through extensive engagement with local inhabitants, commercial enterprises, and collaborating bodies over several years.

Councillor Chris Aramini-Brant, who serves as deputy leader and holds the planning and enforcement portfolio at Cherwell District Council, welcomed the announcement.

The submission for independent examination occurred in July 2025, and the Inspector’s confirmation that progression to the subsequent stage is possible marks a meaningful moment.

An current local plan remains essential for constructing the residences and neighbourhoods required across Cherwell in appropriate locations, with necessary facilities in place, whilst safeguarding the district’s distinctive qualities.

Considerable additional work lies ahead before formal adoption becomes possible, yet this decision constitutes a significant achievement as the review moves forward.

The Inspector’s determination establishes that the document meets the applicable transitional requirements and may continue assessment using the National Planning Policy Framework published in December 2023.
