Fire crews responded to a blaze that broke out in a field situated behind a Travellers’ encampment in Oxford on the evening of Thursday, August 27.
The fire, which ignited at the Redbridge Hollow location, required approximately two hours to bring under control.
Oxfordshire County Council declined to confirm whether the incident was suspected to be arson when approached for comment.
Oxford city councillor Brad Baines reported that Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service personnel arrived at the scene at approximately 10.30pm.
The fire consumed various waste materials.
Emergency services confirmed that no individuals sustained injuries during the incident.
Three fire appliances were dispatched from the Rewley Road and Slade stations to tackle the flames.
Crews remained at the location for roughly two hours.
The matter has been referred to the Environment Agency along with other relevant partner agencies.
Councillor Baines took the opportunity to advise local residents to refrain from igniting any fires or open flames in rural areas, parks, or woodland.
Members of the public who observe any indicators of fire were encouraged to contact emergency services immediately by dialling 999.
A spokesperson for Oxfordshire County Council confirmed that three crews were despatched to address the open-area fire at Redbridge Hollow on Old Abingdon Road.
The initial call reporting the incident was received at 10.06pm.
Crews departed the scene at midnight.
Earlier in the week, on Tuesday, emergency services initiated an arson investigation concerning a separate fire that occurred in a field adjacent to the Redbridge park and ride facility.
The incident necessitated the temporary closure of a section of Abingdon Road, which lies near the A34 Eastern Bypass.
Bus services were consequently unable to serve the affected stop during the closure.
Anna Railton, who serves as deputy leader of the Labour group at Oxford City Council, stated that the council-owned site had previously been identified as presenting a fire hazard, and that vegetation should have been trimmed.
However, she indicated that no action was taken in response to those concerns.
