Authorities in Oxford have confiscated an unlawful electric bicycle during a dedicated enforcement operation.

Officers attached to the north east neighbourhood policing unit conducted inspections of electric bicycles at Croft Road Park in Marston.

The action followed numerous complaints from members of the public.

Five electric bicycles were examined during the operation.

Four of them met current legal requirements.

The remaining bicycle was found to be non-compliant with regulations and was taken into custody.

A statement from PCSO Callum Carruthers, who serves at Cowley, indicated that officers would persist with preventative patrols and enforcement measures to guarantee the safe and legal operation of electric bicycles throughout the area.

Anyone with worries regarding the use of such bicycles locally was encouraged to contact the relevant authorities through the designated reporting systems.

Official figures show that confiscations of unlawful electric bicycles across the Thames Valley region have increased dramatically, rising by 160 percent over a twelve-month period.

Examination of seized machines has revealed that many had been altered to achieve significantly higher speeds.

In certain cases, the modified bicycles were capable of exceeding 70 miles per hour.

Vehicles that fail to meet the appropriate standards function effectively as electric mopeds or motorcycles.

Such vehicles are required to undergo registration, be subject to vehicle taxation, and carry valid insurance coverage.

While established retail outlets distribute large numbers of compliant electric bicycles annually, a substantial proportion of non-compliant machines are acquired through online purchasing platforms.
