Wallingford minister to cycle 330km to Bradford for debt charity

A church minister is preparing to undertake a 330-kilometre cycling event with the aim of assisting families in overcoming financial hardship.

Gareth Lloyd-Jones, associated with Ridgeway Community Church located in Wallingford, has set a target of gathering £3,000 for Christians Against Poverty, a national charitable organisation that delivers complimentary, in-person financial guidance and budgeting assistance through collaborating places of worship.

The contributions collected could enable approximately 16 families experiencing poverty to obtain a debt relief order and achieve financial independence.

Speaking about the initiative, Mr Lloyd-Jones explained that the organisation witnesses financial difficulties directly within the community, describing the experience as deeply moving.

He noted that for individuals already managing tight budgets, a single unforeseen expense can initiate a debt spiral that proves extraordinarily challenging to escape.

Those entangled in debt frequently experience isolation and anxiety, uncertain where to seek help.

Local churches collaborate with Christians Against Poverty to provide those in their neighbourhoods with pathways to financial independence and renewed optimism.

Funds are being sought for the organisation because no individual should have to confront such hardship without support.

The cycling event will depart from Wallingford at 8am during the week beginning September 21, with arrival at the Christians Against Poverty support centre in Bradford scheduled for 2pm the following afternoon.

Mr Lloyd-Jones expressed that the undertaking would be demanding, yet the efforts of churches in assisting people to exit debt cycles prove transformative, making the challenge worthwhile.

He expressed hope that the effort would increase recognition of the services provided by the Didcot and Wallingford Christians Against Poverty Debt Centre while generating essential resources to enable the organisation to continue supporting individuals throughout the country in escaping debt and poverty.

He encouraged members of the public to contribute whatever amount they are able to this significant cause.

The charity recently commemorated 30 years of operation by publishing a report detailing the reach of its programmes, which encompass financial coaching, employment support groups, and practical life skills training.

Across the three decades since its establishment, 80,000 individuals have accessed free debt advice through churches partnered with the organisation, while more than 100,000 have participated in one-to-one financial coaching sessions.

The charity has additionally provided support to over 20,000 people through employment groups and life skills workshops.
