Modella Capital emerges as potential bidder for Poundland

Published on

Investment firm Modella Capital has surfaced as a prospective acquirer for Poundland as the budget retailer prepares for a formal divestiture process overseen by its current proprietor Gordon Brothers.

Modella Capital finalised the purchase of TG Jones, previously trading as WH Smith, during the opening months of the year and has attracted interest from Poundland stakeholders regarding potential acquisition, according to business reporting.

Sector insiders disclosed to Retail Gazette that Modella Capital had not yet formalised any commitment to submit an offer, though the investment group may represent a natural purchaser following its acquisition of Dealz, the former Polish sister operation of Poundland, several months prior.

Poundland maintains a network of outlets throughout Oxfordshire, with locations situated in Abingdon and Didcot, alongside premises at Templars Square retail complex in Cowley.

A number of locations have already ceased operations, including the outlet at Templars retail park in Cowley and the store situated in Bicester.

The Cowley establishment shuttered its doors during the previous year, while the Bicester outlet concluded trading in March following an impasse in lease negotiations with the property owner.

Gordon Brothers, which assumed ownership of Poundland approximately twelve months ago, has engaged advisory firm Alvarez & Marsal to manage a competitive auction of the business, with an official disposal procedure anticipated to commence within the coming weeks.

The restructuring specialist obtained Poundland from Pepco Group for a nominal sum of one pound during the previous year, in a transaction that prompted an extensive transformation of the retailer’s store network.

Poundland presently operates from approximately six hundred locations throughout the United Kingdom and provides employment for roughly twelve thousand individuals.

The potential disposal follows the closure of around two hundred outlets as part of last year’s operational restructuring, which came after an extended period of ambiguity regarding the discounter’s continued operations.

Sources familiar with the company’s affairs maintained that Poundland’s financial results have strengthened following the restructuring, though another transition in ownership would introduce fresh ambiguity for the high street chain.

During January, Poundland’s managing director Barry Williams expressed confidence that the enterprise was progressing favourably after narrowly avoiding failure, as efforts concentrated on restoring its value-focused positioning and streamlining its product range.

Prior to the restructuring initiative, Poundland administered a more extensive portfolio of stores and provided work for in excess of fourteen thousand individuals, serving millions of customers throughout the United Kingdom annually.

Modella Capital’s potential participation would position an investor to acquire one of Britain’s most recognisable discount retail brands, as value-focused chains persist in managing challenges arising from subdued consumer sentiment and escalating operational expenses.

Representatives for Modella Capital and Poundland opted not to provide commentary when approached.

When the Cowley location at Templars Shopping Park, situated on Between Towns Road, discontinued operations during the previous year, a Poundland spokesperson stated that the specific outlet was shutting its doors because acceptable terms could not be secured to enable continued trading from that premises.

The spokesperson noted that an alternative Poundland outlet existed at Templars Square, located approximately three hundred and fifty yards distant, and while acknowledging that loyal customers at the retail park would find the departure disappointing, those patrons would be welcomed at the nearby store situated just a brief five-minute stroll away.
