A British clothing retailer has announced another store closure as part of its ongoing transformation programme.

River Island confirmed the shutdown of its outlet in Longwell Green, located just beyond Bristol’s boundaries, marking another outlet in its nationwide reduction of underperforming locations.

A notice has been displayed inside the shop window advertising discounted merchandise ahead of the September 16 closure date.

This announcement follows a substantial reorganisation at the fashion chain that has resulted in 33 shops ceasing operations across Britain since the start of the year.

Among those shuttered locations was the River Island branch at Oxford Westgate, which stopped trading on January 31.

That vacant unit is now slated to house Spanish fashion chain Bershka.

The upcoming 11,000 square foot Bershka outlet will occupy the upper ground level, positioning itself adjacent to H&M and Urban Outfitters.

Signage for the incoming retailer has already started appearing this month.

Bershka operates under the Inditex conglomerate and was established in 1998 targeting fashion-forward young consumers engaged with current trends, music, emerging technology and social platforms.

The company’s women’s collections comprise two separate ranges: the main Bershka line featuring trend-focused garments such as denim, everyday wear and occasion dresses, alongside the BSK label offering styles inspired by contemporary pop culture.

The Bershka Man division stocks an extensive selection of casual attire, athletic wear and fashionable seasonal pieces.

The new establishment will additionally provide a broad assortment of accessories and footwear.

Clare Martin, who heads Westgate Oxford’s management team, commented that the shopping centre consistently seeks to enhance its commercial offerings to give visitors access to brands unavailable elsewhere in Oxfordshire.

She noted that Bershka had been frequently suggested by shoppers, making the addition particularly welcome.

Further specifics regarding the launch date would be released in due course.

River Island’s strategic overhaul stems from escalating operational expenses on main streets and customers increasingly purchasing through digital channels, according to the company’s chief executive Ben Lewis.

While renegotiated rental agreements preserved more than 70 outlets, certain locations including the Oxford Westgate site proved impossible to sustain.

Lewis had previously noted that River Island held deep roots in British retail history yet the documented movement of shoppers away from physical stores towards internet purchasing left the company with an extensive property portfolio misaligned with contemporary consumer habits.

He added that rapid increases in business operating costs over recent years had compounded the financial pressures.
