Students from Oxfordshire have initiated a campaign calling for legislation to prohibit the depiction of school attire in adult entertainment materials.
The young activists, members of the Little Feminist Bookclub affiliated with Cooper School in Bicester, are appealing directly to the prime minister to implement such restrictions.
The campaign was started by the Bicester students earlier this week and had accumulated more than 900 signatures by September 25.
On the petition platform, the group argued that the use of educational attire in adult content falls outside current legal frameworks and represents a clear form of material that sexualises minors and young people.
The petition stated that such content is specifically designed to invoke images associated with childhood and school-age individuals.
The campaigners noted that existing legislation prevents the depiction of individuals appearing to be under 16 in pornographic material, but this protection does not extend to those aged 16 to 18.
The petition urged lawmakers to prohibit the use of school uniforms in adult content to address this legal gap and safeguard all young people.
The campaign drew upon the expertise of Professor Clare McGlynn from Durham University, who has been at the forefront of efforts to reform legislation governing adult content.
Professor McGlynn has publicly characterised this category of pornographic material as causing daily harm to young teenage girls.
Journalists from The Times spoke with three members of the bookclub: Rose, Mae, and Aylin, all aged 15, along with 14-year-old Willow.
Rose expressed her dislike for wearing her school uniform during the journey home, stating that she cannot tolerate it.
Aylin reflected on the sense of vulnerability experienced while wearing school clothing, questioning why such concerns are not treated with greater urgency and why regulatory measures remain absent.
The petition referenced research conducted in 2018 by the charitable organisation Plan International, which surveyed one thousand girls between the ages of 14 and 21.
The findings indicated that 35 percent of participants had experienced unwanted sexual attention while wearing school attire, with 13 percent reporting such incidents occurring when they were 12 years old or younger.
Eight percent of respondents disclosed that they had been filmed by strangers without their consent while wearing their school uniform.
A representative for Cooper School in Bicester expressed strong support for the initiative.
The school official stated that a group of remarkable adolescent girls were taking a courageous and nationwide stance by campaigning to remove school uniforms from pornographic material.
The spokesperson described the students as determined young women who were highlighting the sexualisation of young people and drawing attention to how the depiction of school clothing in adult media impacts the experiences and treatment of girls in their daily lives.
Members of the Little Feminist Bookclub stated that children were being sexualised through the portrayal of school-age imagery in pornographic content.
The group is continuing its efforts to gather public support for the petition.
