Oxford University has established a new rugby collaboration with St Edward’s School, a private educational institution located on Woodstock Road.
The agreement, disclosed this week, connects Oxford University’s rugby football club with the independent school, creating links between sporting and academic activities.
Students enrolled at St Edward’s will gain access to Oxford University’s facilities and interact with members of the university rugby squad and coaching personnel.
Scott Hall, who serves as the partnerships director for Oxford University RFC, expressed enthusiasm regarding the initiative.
According to Hall, the collaboration presents an opportunity to introduce Iffley Road and the broader Oxford environment to aspiring young athletes.
He noted that the programme aims to provide students with experiences such as competing under floodlights, touring university colleges and hearing directly from players about their paths to Oxford, offering authentic insight into the combination of elite education and rugby.
One of the inaugural significant events under this arrangement is scheduled for Friday September 25, when St Edward’s will compete against Abingdon School at Iffley Road.
The match is set to begin at 6:45pm under floodlights.
Oxford University RFC will provide support for the inter-school fixture through access to the Iffley Road venue, ticketing arrangements and match-day hospitality provisions.
These hospitality arrangements include a pre-match dinner and post-match catering for participants, officials and staff members.
The contest forms part of a broader Sixth Form Rugby Experience Day, intended to highlight the prospects available to dedicated rugby players.
The collaboration is planned to extend throughout the present academic year and subsequent periods.
Joe Winpenny, director of rugby at St Edward’s, stated that the agreement unites two of the most prominent rugby programmes operating within the city.
