Kennington marks anniversary with library opening in Musanda, Kenya

A milestone marking the first anniversary of a historic partnership between an Oxfordshire community and a Kenyan village will be commemorated with the inauguration of a new library facility.

Kennington, located in Oxfordshire, formalised its twinning arrangement with Musanda, situated in Kenya, on October 11, 2025, establishing itself as the inaugural United Kingdom village to enter such a relationship with a Kenyan community.

To observe this first year of connection, a newly constructed library resource centre will be inaugurated in Musanda.

The initiative emerged following the release of a collaborative literary work authored jointly by Sylvia Vetta from Kennington and Nancy Mudenyo Hunt from Musanda, bearing the title Not So Black and White.

Upon the book’s release, Vetta proposed distributing copies to libraries throughout western Kenya, only to discover that no such institutions were present in the region.

Vetta expressed the determination that such a facility ought to be established.

With backing from the local population of Kennington, financial contributions were gathered to finance the library’s construction, while Mudenyo Hunt managed implementation efforts within the Kenyan community.

Vetta intends to travel to Musanda to participate in the library’s opening ceremony on October 10.

According to Vetta, Mudenyo Hunt selected an inspirational motto for the centre, describing it as universally applicable: READ DREAM GROW.

Celebrations in Kennington will commence at 10am with the arrival of attendees, followed by a musical display from the Kennington Silver Band at 10.15am.

A video conferencing connection will link participants gathered in Kennington with those assembled in Musanda, enabling both populations to participate together in the festivities.

National anthems from both nations will be performed, and the resource centre will receive its formal opening through blessings offered by Kenyan religious leaders.

The programme will feature addresses from dignitaries alongside musical contributions originating from both communities.

A commemorative plaque will be installed adjacent to an apple tree that was planted during the previous year to mark the original twinning ceremony.
