A small Oxfordshire settlement with a population of 358 has endorsed a bid to separate from the United Kingdom following a parish council-organised ballot.

The outcome was disclosed during a BBC television broadcast on Tuesday 15 September, with Susannah Parden, Vice-Chair of Piddington Parish Council and Returning Officer for the poll, presenting the figures.

Voters were posed a single question: whether they wished for Piddington to exit the UK and pursue self-determination.

Among the 312 valid ballots, 285 supported the proposition, 26 opposed it, with one vote deemed spoilt.

The ballot comes after sustained local resistance to official proposals for accommodation facilities housing more than 1,000 asylum seekers at the former MOD Bicester military installation.

The village sits approximately 250 metres from the designated location for the proposed centre and was specifically referenced within the government’s formal planning submission as a neighbouring community warranting consideration of potential impacts.

Earlier in the summer, BBC News Oxfordshire documented an initial poll convened by the parish council to determine whether a formal referendum should proceed.

Results from the 4 July gathering indicated that 96 percent of participants backed the idea of holding such a vote, despite the exercise carrying no binding legal weight.

Considerable public opposition from villagers has been documented throughout the consultation period.

On 26 August, a video piece entitled Piddington Roars – The Battle of Britain appeared on the PiddingtonRoarsVevo YouTube channel.

As of 16 September, the upload had attracted in excess of 15,000 views.

The production features period footage of Spitfire aircraft operating above a wartime-era depiction of Piddington, accompanied by a female vocalist performing a track symbolising local resistance as part of a broader national struggle.

The recurring lyrical hook contains the phrase: It is the Battle for Britain, Piddington Roars.

As the BBC broadcast concluded on 15 September, Parden echoed the sentiment by stating: Piddington, the village that roared.

A banner bearing the Battle for Britain message was also visible throughout the transmission.

Responding to the referendum and subsequent media attention, Prime Minister Andy Burnham addressed the situation by acknowledging the weight of feeling among opponents.

He noted that the matter involved challenging choices and centred on achieving equity throughout the nation.

The Prime Minister indicated he would examine the specific concerns put forward by the community and emphasised the necessity for a balanced approach.

He additionally referenced the volume of small boat crossings, noting that figures had declined in comparison with previous years.

Following the vote, BBC News Oxfordshire reported on Tuesday 17 September that legal representatives acting for Bicester Countryside and Communities, a community interest company operating locally, had dispatched a pre-action protocol letter to the Home Office.

The correspondence aims to establish grounds for challenging the proposed development through judicial means.

Attempts were made to obtain a statement from Piddington Parish Council.
