Tributes have been flooding in following the death of Jill Gant, an 88-year-old resident of Appleford Drive in Abingdon whose body was discovered at her home on Thursday afternoon, September 10.
Representatives from St Helen’s Church in Abingdon expressed their sorrow at the news, describing Gant as a dedicated and cherished member of the congregation for many years.
According to the church spokesperson, she participated actively in numerous aspects of church activities and had formed friendships with worshippers at the other parish churches, St Nicolas’ and St Michael and All Angels.
The spokesperson noted that her strong religious convictions were evident in her compassion for others and her commitment to causes including environmental protection and social justice.
The church community offered their thoughts to Gant’s family, friends, and neighbours during this difficult period, while also expressing gratitude for the life she lived and her contributions to the local area.
St Ethelwold’s House, a sanctuary and garden facility in Abingdon, also shared their memories of the deceased.
Representatives described Gant as a longtime supporter, associate, and board member who was central to the organisation’s identity.
They stated their intention to preserve her legacy of warmth and practicality as they continue their work.
Daniel Boore, also an Appleford Drive resident, has been charged by Thames Valley Police in connection with the suspected murder and has made a court appearance.
Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Brangwin, who is leading the investigation, acknowledged that the circumstances might concern local residents.
He emphasised that with criminal proceedings now underway, members of the public should refrain from speculation or sharing material online that could potentially affect the case.
Abingdon North county councillor Nathan Ley addressed the community’s reaction to the police operation.
He stated that locals were stunned by the incident, particularly given the peaceful nature of the neighbourhood where residents typically look out for one another.
