Thames Valley Police has confirmed the appointment of a new canine officer to its Wantage detachment.
The German Shepherd, named Kali, has been placed in the care of a serving officer at the station while she undergoes initial socialisation and training.
The addition brings the number of operational dogs serving the local area to several, with the newcomer currently acclimatising to the sights and sounds associated with police duties.
Officers explained that trained police dogs across the force are assigned duties such as locating individuals who have fled from officers, uncovering hidden items, controlling gatherings and providing a visible presence to discourage criminal activity.
A representative from the Wantage and Grove neighbourhood policing unit confirmed that Kali had been entrusted to a colleague at the station during her formative weeks.
The spokesperson noted that, much like an existing dog at the establishment, Kali was still mastering foundational skills but was expected to progress rapidly into full operational duties when required.
For the time being, the puppy’s primary activities centre on play, discovery and becoming accustomed to the ambient noise and activity characteristic of a police station environment.
Officers indicated the unit looked forward to the dog’s continued development and eventual contribution to the force’s operations.
