The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has addressed the expenditure of £3.285million incurred by Oxfordshire and West Berkshire local authorities in connection with proposals to restructure local government.
The initiative to reorganise council boundaries was suspended by central government earlier this month after receiving legal counsel that local government secretary Angela Rayner declined to disclose specifics about.
The seven authorities involved – Oxfordshire County Council, Oxford City Council, South Oxfordshire District Council, Vale of White Horse District Council, West Oxfordshire District Council, Cherwell District Council and West Berkshire Council – have collectively expended £3.285million of council tax revenue, excluding staff resource costs.
A representative from the Department for Local Government stated that the programme was undergoing review to ensure proper procedures were followed, legal requirements were satisfied, and the new administration’s objectives were addressed.
The representative acknowledged the considerable efforts already invested by the councils and partner organisations, indicating that guidance would be provided to assist areas through subsequent phases of any potential restructuring.
The administration confirmed its commitment to ensuring the review process produces optimal results for local authorities and their constituents.
A spokesperson for the seven councils indicated that expenditure on the reorganisation proposals would be halted while the governmental assessment remained in progress.
The spokesperson expressed confidence that the work completed and funds committed would establish a solid basis for preparing for whatever form local government might take in the region going forward.
The councils expressed the hope that the review would conclude promptly so that residents, businesses and employees across Oxfordshire and West Berkshire could receive clarity regarding future arrangements.
