Fans Remember Oxford United’s 3-0 Milk Cup Victory 40 Years On

A previously unpublished photograph has emerged depicting supporters commemorating Oxford United’s Milk Cup triumph at Wembley four decades prior.

The four individuals captured in the image displayed exuberant celebrations upon returning to the city following their side’s comprehensive 3-0 victory over Queen’s Park Rangers.

Photographed from left to right by Oxford Mail photographer Susie Barker at Carfax were Peter Wood, aged 21, Peter Hambridge, aged 21, Adam Baker, aged 20, and Steve Disley, aged 20, participating in the festivities.

Should the squad have required additional fortification for their performance, Abingdon-based butcher Bruce Bosley, depicted in a separate image alongside several United players, may have contributed to their preparation.

Certain members of the playing squad were patrons of his establishment located on Oxford Road, and several days preceding the encounter, he provided 18 of them with fresh meat.

Mr Bosley, photographed alongside his three sons, represented the fourth generation of the family enterprise, which was commemorating its 106th anniversary.

The Wembley occasion proved unforgettable for both the playing staff and the supporters.

According to the Oxford Mail, more than 90,000 spectators, in addition to significantly larger numbers viewing on television, witnessed the modest club storm Wembley.

They did not merely defeat Queen’s Park Rangers; they overwhelmed them into capitulation.

Following a tentative opening period, United assumed control and concluded with such dominance that Rangers could have been absent.

United’s display reflected credit upon the players, manager Maurice Evans and his coaching staff, the remarkable Oxford supporters, and more significantly, upon football itself.

It marked the most commanding Wembley triumph in the tournament’s history.

Both clubs occupied positions in the First Division during the 1985-86 campaign, and each entered the Milk Cup, designated as such due to sponsorship arrangements, commencing in the second round.

Oxford’s victorious campaign commenced with a 4-1 aggregate triumph across two matches against Northampton Town.

Subsequently came 3-1 victories on home soil against Newcastle United, holders Norwich City, and Portsmouth during the third, fourth, and fifth rounds respectively, establishing a two-legged semi-final confrontation with Aston Villa.

The initial encounter concluded level at 2-2, though Oxford secured progression through a 2-1 success in the return fixture.

Previously, Oxford had never advanced beyond the quarter-final stage in the competition.

The Mail report further stated that as proceedings commenced, an oversized yellow balloon drifted across the pitch.

This led some to speculate whether this might have symbolised United’s Wembley aspirations dissipating, though this proved not to be the case.

After 40 minutes, Trevor Hebberd, who earned the man-of-the-match accolade, handed United the advantage, and second-half strikes from Ray Houghton and Jeremy Charles dispatched the supporters home in celebration.

Four decades on, United aim for comparable achievements in League One as they pursue reinstatement to the Championship following the previous season’s relegation.
