The parish council in a South Oxfordshire village has abandoned its application to join a countywide initiative restricting vehicle access on certain roads after receiving objections from residents.
Goring Parish Council submitted an expression of interest in Oxfordshire County Council’s Quiet Lane programme, which aims to prohibit most motor vehicles from designated stretches of highway.
The council had nominated Battle Road for inclusion in the scheme.
However, on 17 September, the authority announced it was pulling out of the application process.
According to a council communication, residents had raised concerns about the proposal, prompting the decision to withdraw.
The parish council confirmed it would not continue its involvement with the initiative.
Despite this withdrawal, officials emphasised that efforts to promote sustainable transportation would persist.
The authority’s Travel and Transport committee intends to continue developing proposals for cycling infrastructure and a vehicle-restricted route connecting to Wallingford.
Support from Cllr Maggie Filipova Rivers for these measures was acknowledged.
Oxfordshire County Council indicated that every Quiet Lane nomination undergoes evaluation using consistent criteria, ensuring determinations remain fair, uniform and grounded in data.
The county authority outlined a seven-phase rollout, comprising community consultation, senior member authorisation, an initial pilot period, and formal assessment to gauge outcomes before reaching a conclusive resolution.
