The future of Michael Caine’s former riverside residence in Oxfordshire remains uncertain after the property failed to attract a buyer following its removal from the market.
The Grade II listed country house near Wallingford was withdrawn from sale in July, with estate agency Savills now confirming that the property has still not changed hands despite the passage of two months since its de-listing.
Originally placed on the market in early June the previous year, the historic dwelling carried an initial asking price of £10 million.
In February, the vendor decided to take the property off the market before reintroducing it for sale in March at a reduced price one million pounds below its original figure.
Caine occupied the property with his family during the period from 1984 until 1999, and the distinguished performer who portrayed the comic book character Alfred in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and the miserly Ebenezer Scrooge in the festive film featuring the Muppets disposed of the residence in 2020.
Described in promotional material as architecturally noteworthy, the 17th-century dwelling offered prospective purchasers what was billed as an authentic English country lifestyle experience.
The property features six bedrooms and occupies a substantial footprint of 17,000 square feet.
Its amenities include a swimming pool with a capacity of 100,000 litres, a sauna, and a Moroccan-inspired jacuzzi.
The interior accommodation comprises two kitchens, five bathrooms, a music room, a drawing room, and multiple sitting rooms.
The ground floor also contains a utility room, a gymnasium, a plant room, a boot room, and two lavatories.
During his ownership, the actor substantially enlarged the estate and established numerous specimen trees throughout the grounds, which extend to 600 feet along the River Thames.
According to Savills representative Victoria Knight, who heads the agency’s Henley office, the property sits on the longest uninterrupted stretch of the Thames located between lock systems, providing extensive opportunities for recreational boating activities.
Despite the considerable water frontage, the house itself remains concealed from the river view and is enveloped by landscaped gardens.
Beneath the manicured lawn areas, meadowland creates an environment supporting local wildlife populations including otters, swans, kingfishers, hedgehogs, sparrowhawks, buzzards, rooks, and deer.
The sale encompasses a separate cottage containing a sitting room, kitchen, ground floor bedroom suite, and a mezzanine bedroom suite.
Additional structures include a timber-clad triple garage block providing three car ports, a spacious storage area for equipment, a log store, and first floor storage facilities.
A lodge situated within the grounds currently functions as staff accommodation.
