Government statistics have shown that Oxford West & Abingdon ranks second lowest for personal independence payment claims among English and Welsh constituencies, trailing only Bristol Central.
Research published by the Department for Work and Pensions on Tuesday ranked constituencies according to the proportion of working-age residents receiving the disability benefit.
Personal independence payments serve as the primary financial support for individuals with enduring physical or mental health conditions or disabilities.
The working-age demographic spans those between 16 and 64 years old.
In Oxford West & Abingdon, currently held by Liberal Democrat MP Layla Moran, just 3.4 per cent of working-age adults access personal independence payments.
This figure sits one percentage point above Bristol Central, which holds the lowest position at 3.3 per cent, and approximately six times lower than Liverpool Walton, where the rate reaches 19.3 per cent.
As of 31 July 2026, nine constituencies across England and Wales have at least one in six working-age adults claiming the benefit.
None of these areas fall within Oxfordshire.
Henley & Thame, represented by Liberal Democrat Freddie Van Mierlo, also registers among the lowest rates at 4 per cent.
The neighbouring constituencies of Witney and Didcot and Wantage both record 4.9 per cent, with Liberal Democrat MPs Charlie Maynard and Olly Glover respectively holding these seats.
Bicester & Woodstock, represented by fellow party member Calum Miller, shows a rate of 5.2 per cent.
In Labour-held Oxford East, represented by Anneliese Dodds, the figure stands at 5.4 per cent, while Banbury, with Sean Woodcock as its MP, records 5.8 per cent.
The official data indicates 4.09 million individuals were eligible for personal independence payments as of 31 July 2026.
This represents an increase from 3.83 million twelve months prior, a growth of 262,045 recipients or 7 per cent.
The national caseload has expanded significantly since comparable records commenced in January 2019, when the total stood at 2.05 million.
Age-based analysis shows those aged 50 and above constitute the largest group at 55 per cent of all claimants.
Those between 30 and 49 account for nearly 29 per cent, while 16 to 29-year-olds represent almost 17 per cent.
Last year, ministerial proposals to modify disability benefits, including provisions affecting individuals with mental health conditions, were withdrawn following opposition from members of the governing party’s own parliamentary ranks.

Official figures demonstrate expenditure on the benefit reached £16.3 billion in 2019-20 when adjusted for inflation, rising to £27.3 billion by 2024-25.
Projections indicate costs could reach £41.5 billion by 2030-31.
