A historic walkway at Oxford University Parks has been shut to the public following damage that authorities have deemed hazardous to users.
Mesopotamia Walk traverses a slender strip of land for more than 700 metres between two channels of the River Cherwell.
The route was originally constructed by the university and first opened to visitors in 1865.
Damage of unknown origin has compromised the surface of the footpath, rendering it dangerous for pedestrians.
The parks department at Oxford University has therefore sealed off the route until further notice and indicated it would remain inaccessible for a minimum of seven days.
According to a university representative, the closure stems from deterioration affecting part of the concrete surface that has produced a substantial trip risk for those using the path.
An internal maintenance crew has been tasked with carrying out the necessary remedial work.
The institution has set a target reopening date of Monday, 14 September.
The university expressed regret over the disruption to visitors and asked members of the public to bear with the works while essential safety improvements are undertaken.
