A group of elderly residents from a local care facility joined members of Banbury United’s senior squad for a training session prior to their upcoming FA Cup fixture.
The activity took place at The TUGO Community Stadium on the morning of Saturday, 5 September, as part of an initiative connected to the club’s recently established relationship with Highmarket House care home.
Under the guidance of community coach Ryan Jones, residents participated alongside players and coaching staff in shooting practice before observing the remainder of the squad’s preparation for their cup encounter with Exmouth Town.
Claire Dumbreck, serving as club secretary at Banbury United, commented on the arrangement, noting that bringing fresh faces into a community football club yields advantages for all involved.
She highlighted the enthusiasm generated by the involvement of Highmarket House staff and residents.
The club official further observed that athletic activities possess the capacity to generate happiness and foster connections independent of age or physical capabilities, describing the training session as an illustration of this principle.
Highmarket House, which operates under Care UK management, commenced its sponsorship of the football club this campaign after residents indicated a desire to attend a match.
Following a positive initial experience, management from the care facility approached Banbury United to discuss expanded participation opportunities.
Dumbreck also referenced the club’s previous FA Cup campaign, acknowledging the significant backing received from the local population and suggesting that substantial attendance provides motivation for the playing staff.
She expressed hope that Banbury residents would demonstrate similar support during the current competition.
A significant renovation of Highmarket House’s premises in Banbury is scheduled to be revealed on Thursday, 3 September.
Members of the public are welcome to tour the facility between 2pm and 4pm on that date.
