Oxfordshire County Council is set to introduce penalties for motorists who violate traffic regulations on Botley Road once the route reopens.
The authority received powers in 2022 to issue fines for moving traffic violations, with maximum penalties reaching £70.
The road is scheduled to reopen on September 20, after which the council intends to conduct additional traffic surveys to inform its enforcement strategy.
Specific details regarding camera placement have not yet been disclosed.
The proposed enforcement targets drivers who use the bus lane on Botley Road to circumvent traffic signals onto West Way, particularly the section near Seacourt park and ride.
Currently, no camera monitors this lane.
Oxfordshire County Council has published a list identifying 28 locations where enforcement is sought, which includes the bus and park and ride lane on Botley Road in Oxford.
Local ward councillor Susanna Pressel, who represents both the city division of Osney and St Thomas and the county division of Jericho and Osney, noted that compliance violations frequently provoked strong reactions among motorists who adhered to traffic rules.
She observed that during the road’s previous operation, the reserved lane for buses and park and ride users experienced significant misuse.
Motorists frequently entered the designated lane when adjacent eastbound traffic was congested, using the shortcut to bypass queues.
Pressel expressed support for the council’s new enforcement capabilities, suggesting that those unwilling to endure traffic delays should utilise the park and ride facility if possible.
The corridor between Botley Interchange and Seacourt park and ride is designated exclusively for passengers boarding buses to the city centre.
Despite these restrictions, numerous drivers continue to utilise the route as an unauthorized bypass around queuing vehicles and traffic signals.
Local residents report that law enforcement occasionally patrols the stretch to identify rule-breakers.
In 2012, a widely reported operation resulted in 20 drivers being detected within 90 minutes, each receiving a £30 penalty.
Drivers intercepted during that operation offered various justifications, including claims that their actions alleviated broader traffic congestion and explanations regarding bus stop visits.
Proposals to install monitoring equipment on Botley Road were previously considered by the county council during the early 2000s, though those plans did not proceed to implementation.
