Magdalen College School in Oxford has selected Alan Bird as the institution’s incoming Master, according to an announcement from the school.
Mr Bird, who currently serves as Head of City of London School, will take up the position when Helen Pike concludes her tenure next August.
The independent school, located in east Oxford, maintains its position among the country’s leading educational establishments, placing within the top 20 independent secondary schools as documented in The Sunday Times Parent Power Schools Guide 2026.
Mr Bird emerged as the unanimous selection from a competitive field of candidates, offering extensive experience in educational leadership at prominent institutions including Tonbridge School and Brighton College.
Throughout his time at City of London, Mr Bird has maintained academic, pastoral and co-curricular standards while introducing new initiatives.
He developed the ‘City Ready’ careers programme and broadened the curriculum to encompass emerging disciplines such as artificial intelligence and robotics, preparing students for future success.
The current Master has also strengthened connections with City of London School for Girls, including the establishment of the co-educational City Junior School in 2022, with a Joint Sixth Form Centre targeted for completion in 2028.
Mr Bird pursued economics studies at Cambridge University, achieving a Prize First, and later obtained a Master’s qualification from the London School of Economics.
The appointment arrives at a significant juncture for the school, which prepares to welcome its initial cohort of female students to the junior school and develops scheduling for the new Science and Partnerships Building.
The forthcoming academic year will allow for transition preparations and recognition of Ms Pike’s contributions during her leadership.

Governors expressed confidence that his experience in leadership and innovation positions him well to guide the institution forward.
Mr Bird commented that Magdalen College School establishes benchmarks for academic and co-curricular achievement nationally, with such results stemming from ambition and enjoyment.
He considered his appointment both a privilege and source of excitement, noting that building upon existing foundations would make the coming years significant, particularly with the expansion to full co-education and site development proposals.
He emphasised that student happiness and development would remain central priorities.
Having become more familiar with the school in recent months, he observed alignment between institutional values and his own principles.
He expressed anticipation for joining the community the following year and collaborating with Helen Pike during the transition period.
