Oxfordshire County Council has withdrawn proposals for a new bus stop on Broughton Road in Banbury following objections from local residents and a ward councillor.
The planned facility was to be positioned opposite Frank Wise School and in proximity to the Hornbeam Close junction.
Concerns were submitted regarding the potential for obstructed views and traffic congestion, with particular emphasis on the safety implications during school arrival and departure periods.
Councillor Keiron Mallon, representing the Banbury Easington division, noted that the junction experiences significant volumes of coaches, minibuses and wheelchair-accessible vehicles during peak hours.
He observed that the proposed site sits on a steep incline with limited visibility.
According to the Banbury Guardian, Councillor Mallon stated that Oxfordshire County Council had implemented traffic measures without adequate consideration of local conditions.
Residents reported receiving no advance notification of the scheme.
They only became aware when construction workers arrived and informed them that excavation was set to commence.
Matthew Warner, a local resident who engaged with the contractors, requested that operations cease pending a formal review by the Highway Authority to verify whether statutory consultation requirements had been satisfied.
The councillor subsequently expressed criticism regarding the employment of operatives who had reportedly travelled from Portsmouth for a single task, describing this as both financially irresponsible and environmentally questionable.
Following subsequent clarification, it was established that the contractors had in fact originated from Thatcham in West Berkshire.
Oxfordshire County Council acknowledged the absence of consultation and extended an apology.
A council representative confirmed that the proposal had been reviewed and would not proceed at that location.
The existing stop located on the opposite pavement would instead be formally marked.
The authority indicated that improvements to stops along routes connecting Banbury and Shipston are being undertaken using central government funding, with the objective of enhancing public transport accessibility and supporting sustainable travel options.
