Thame Players to stage Noël Coward’s 1932 Design for Living at Players Theatre, Sept 8-12

Published on

Noël Coward’s provocative comedy Design for Living will receive a new production by Thame Players at the Players Theatre in Oxfordshire this September.

Performances are scheduled from September 8th through 12th at the Nelson Street venue in Thame.

Marcus Prince assumes directorial responsibilities for the production.

The staging seeks to honour the witty and transgressive qualities that earned the 1932 play its reputation for controversy and critical praise during its initial presentation.

Prince has stated that the work centres on the complexities inherent in love across its many forms.

The themes explored remain remarkably relevant more than nine decades after the play’s debut.

Directing this piece has represented a long-held professional goal for Prince, who considers its examination of sexual identity, personal freedom and the compromises required when challenging conventional norms to be particularly resonant for modern audiences.

Prince additionally emphasised the play’s keen scrutiny of how professional success and public recognition affect intimate relationships.

Design for Living occupies a distinguished position as one of Coward’s most audacious dramatic efforts.

The work was initially forbidden from production within Britain due to its depiction of a romantic triangle before eventually premiering on Broadway.

Coward himself originated the role of Leo in that original Broadway staging.

The story spans three metropolitan centres – Paris, London and New York – and employs Coward’s signature precision in dialogue and societal commentary to explore unconventional romantic configurations.

The New York Times acclaimed it as Coward’s most brilliant creation, observing that his theatrical artistry had never seemed more exhilarating or more completely assured.

Noël Coward, referred to by colleagues as The Master, established himself across multiple artistic fields encompassing drama, performance, staging, production and music.

His body of work encompasses notable stage productions including Fallen Angels, Hay Fever and Private Lives – the final named work having been written specifically for Gertrude Lawrence.

During the war years, he produced lasting successes such as Blithe Spirit and Present Laughter alongside the screenplay for Brief Encounter.

In his later career, he attained significant popularity as a cabaret entertainer and television personality, including a sold-out season in Las Vegas.

Coward consistently revisited romantic themes throughout his professional trajectory, delving into love’s intricacies and contradictions.

Evening performances throughout the run begin at 7.45pm, with an additional matinee scheduled for 2.30pm on September 12th.

Ticket prices are set between £10 and £12.

Thame Players will celebrate fifty years at the Players Theatre during 2027.

The company produces five productions annually, including a pantomime, while also hosting approximately thirty visiting performances and over twenty-five cinema screenings.

The organisation operates entirely through voluntary contribution and holds charitable status.
