TG Jones closing-down sale: Essex stores in Basildon, Southend and Maldon to shut

Published on

A high street retailer has initiated a clearance event as part of a significant business transformation, with merchandise priced from £1.

TG Jones, previously operating under the WH Smith name, has obtained judicial authorisation for a comprehensive refinancing arrangement that will likely result in the shutdown of approximately 150 retail locations and impact numerous employment positions.

The restructuring proposal received endorsement from the High Court during July, enabling the company to avoid administration.

Discount promotions have emerged at TG Jones branches throughout Britain, with the sale also accessible through digital channels.

The business operates roughly 450 outlets with a workforce of 4,700, predominantly situated in Britain.

Prior communications indicated that the operational overhaul would potentially jeopardise positions, though a specific figure has not been released.

The digital storefront is offering merchandise starting at £1, encompassing diverse products such as gift packaging, literature, and play items.

The online promotion emphasises that these reduced prices represent a final opportunity for purchases before stock is depleted.

Digital discounts encompass reductions of 50 percent on autographed and collector’s publications, up to 50 percent reductions on writing materials and office supplies, 20 percent off construction block assortments, and markdowns reaching 75 percent on seasonal merchandise.

Locations in Essex, specifically Basildon, Southend, and Maldon, are slated to cease trading during September and October.

The Stroud establishment is similarly conducting a clearance event prior to departing the commercial district.

The enterprise underwent a name change last year following acquisition by Modella, whereas the previous parent company maintained its presence in transit hubs including aviation facilities and railway stations.

Alex Willson, the chief executive, stated that the judicial authorisation enables the progression of the turnaround strategy.

The arrangement safeguards the primary retail network and positions TG Jones as a more robust and viable enterprise.

Acknowledgement was extended to personnel, associates, and interested parties who contributed constructively throughout the proceedings, alongside Modella Capital for its continued financial involvement.

Tom Smith KC, representing TG Jones, indicated that the anticipated outcome involves roughly 150 establishments shutting down, with property owners who decline the modified rental terms permitted to conclude lease agreements.

He noted that the enterprise has experienced persistent commercial decline, compounded by inflationary pressures, the expansion of internet retail, diminished household expenditure, and elevated employment and fiscal obligations.

The transition away from the previous brand identity was cited as an additional factor affecting revenue performance.
