Oxford University Hospitals has implemented modifications through its Sustainable Eye Care division, located at the Oxford Eye Hospital within the John Radcliffe Hospital complex.
The facility provides tens of thousands of vision-preserving treatments annually.
Over several years, the team conducted a comprehensive review of every element involved in the injection procedure to identify opportunities for waste reduction without affecting the quality of care provided to patients.
Consultant ophthalmologist Sam de Silva explained that healthcare organisations bear a responsibility to evaluate the environmental consequences of their services while continuing to deliver optimal patient outcomes.
The group examined each phase of the injection process and sought to implement changes that would create lasting improvements.
According to the specialist, the outcome is a more straightforward methodology supported by clinical evidence, favoured by numerous patients, and producing considerably less waste.
The evaluation resulted in the elimination of superfluous single-use materials, refinement of the injection procedure, and cessation of products deemed unnecessary, including postoperative antibiotic courses.
The department additionally transitioned from employing sterile gloves to non-sterile alternatives and curtailed reliance on disposable instruments.
A dataset encompassing more than 120,000 injections administered between 2016 and 2024 was examined to determine the effects of these modifications.
The analysis revealed no elevation in the incidence of severe infection, alongside improvements in patient comfort and waste management.
