Oxford Mushroom Farm hosts free Bank Holiday open day with live music

An Oxfordshire-based mushroom cultivation business is set to welcome visitors during the Bank Holiday weekend with an event combining fungi and entertainment.

Oxford Mushroom Farm will open its doors to the public on a free basis tomorrow, operating between noon and five in the afternoon.

Situated on land that was previously unused adjacent to Hinksey Heights Golf Club, the operation commenced trading earlier during the summer months with the objective of supplying fresh gourmet mushrooms to households and commercial establishments throughout Oxfordshire.

Proprietor Steve Hart indicated that, much like the organisms themselves, the enterprise continues to expand, and the open day represents an opportunity to attract additional customers interested in fungal produce.

A native of Oxford who received his education at Cherwell School, Hart established the farm in January 2024 with a vision to convert barren terrain into a productive agricultural venture.

Following a period of two years during which he managed the project concurrently with his primary employment as a construction professional, landscape gardener and heating systems specialist, he formally launched the farm to customers in May.

The farm cultivates an assortment of mushroom varieties including Lion’s Mane, oyster, shiitake, and speckled chestnut specimens, with sustainability forming the foundation of the operation.

High-quality mushroom growing mediums are manufactured using wood shavings obtained as a natural by-product from timber processing facilities located in the Snowdonia mountain region, mixed with water from natural springs on Snowdon itself, in partnership with growers Fungi Foods based in North Wales.

In addition to distributing fresh produce within the local area, Hart has expressed interest in the developing field of mycoremediation, an environmentally conscious methodology employing fungi to assist in the decomposition of soil contaminants and the revitalisation of degraded land.

His stated primary objective involves nourishing the Oxford population while simultaneously applying scientific knowledge and mycoremediation techniques to address polluted terrain and illegally dumped sites throughout Oxfordshire.
