A milestone anniversary commemorating seven decades of intercontinental camaraderie was observed through a ceremonial gathering honouring the enduring link between two European municipalities.

On the twenty-second day of August, a contingent exceeding forty individuals originating from the Normandy settlement of Argentan arrived in Abingdon to commemorate the sixtieth year of their municipal partnership.

The programme commenced with an official reception held within the Roysse Chamber situated at the Guildhall, during which both municipal leaders addressed the assembled company in their counterpart’s native tongue.

Councillor Andrew Skinner delivered remarks in the French language while his counterpart, Councillor Emmanuel Flouvat, communicated in English, prior to both appending their signatures to a celebratory parchment marking the occasion.

Elin Bornemann, representing the Abingdon County Hall Museum, provided a historical exposition concerning the receiving municipality, with light refreshments subsequently served and a performance staged by the Abingdon Traditional Morris Dancers under Mr Hemming’s direction.

Visitors from the French delegation participated alongside the dancers during one of the presentations.

Numerous those present attired themselves in garments displaying the heraldic emblems of their respective towns alongside the commemorative inscription marking the seven decade partnership spanning from 1956 through 2026.

The overseas party also enjoyed inspection of the County Hall Museum alongside participation in conducted tours traversing the locality.

Subset formations journeyed to St Helen’s Church together with its accompanying campanile prior to the programme drawing to a close with an evening meal hosted at an establishment on Bath Street.

The French delegation bore standards inscribed with a phrase signifying Normans for a decade, referencing the administrative consolidation undertaken in 2016 which merged the former separate territories of Haute-Normandie and Basse-Normandie into the unified administrative region now designated Normandy.
