Forces including those operating in Oxfordshire have introduced DNA-based marking systems as part of their response to problem riders.
The technology, sourced from SelectaDNA and DeterTech’s SmartTag product, utilises handheld canisters capable of projecting the solution distances of approximately ten metres.
The substance applies an invisible marker to individuals, garments and vehicles, remaining detectable solely under ultraviolet illumination.
Each applicator generates a distinctive forensic signature corresponding to that specific canister.
This arrangement permits investigators to establish connections between suspects and particular incidents even after intervals of several weeks or months have elapsed.
Hampshire Constabulary has indicated that the methodology provides officers with a reduced-risk tactical choice when managing motorcycles, electric bicycles and electric scooters employed in criminal conduct or anti-social behaviour, thereby decreasing reliance on hazardous pursuits or direct confrontation with operators.
The introduction follows escalating reports of powered two-wheel vehicle operators riding on pedestrian pathways and communal zones.
Dorset Police and additional regional forces have previously undertaken comparable programmes, preferring forensic marking over pursuits through congested streets.
Thames Valley Police, responsible for Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire, has incorporated the spray technology following coverage by the BBC in April.
