Oxfordshire GP surgeries offer finger-prick cardiovascular checks

A network of GP practices is introducing unlimited heart health assessments as part of an ambitious new healthcare initiative.

Unity Health, which manages five medical facilities located in Brill, Chinnor, Long Crendon, Princes Risborough, and Thame, will commence the screening programme on September 1.

The assessments utilise PocDoc’s Healthy Heart Check technology, involving a simple finger-prick blood test that delivers a comprehensive cholesterol analysis, NHS Heart Age calculation, and a cardiovascular risk evaluation spanning the next decade.

Patients will not need to book GP appointments to undergo testing, and examination outcomes will be automatically uploaded to individual medical records.

Vanessa Woodley, managing director at Unity Health, explained that primary care services occupy a crucial position in detecting cardiovascular vulnerabilities at an earlier stage.

She noted that numerous individuals facing elevated risk factors do not experience obvious symptoms and may therefore not seek examination voluntarily.

The collaboration, she continued, provides an innovative mechanism for proactively identifying cardiovascular risk throughout their registered patient base.

Woodley emphasised that specific demographics within the local population face heightened vulnerability, making the programme particularly significant.

The initiative aims to locate individuals who might otherwise remain unidentified and guarantee they receive appropriate assistance before serious health problems develop.

The partnership follows screening activities conducted at the Thame Sheep Fair, where agricultural workers and farmers underwent assessment using identical technology.

Findings revealed that 88 percent of those examined displayed elevated cholesterol levels, while three quarters reported not having undergone any cardiovascular assessment during the preceding five years.

This arrangement represents PocDoc’s inaugural contract providing unrestricted testing services to a general practice through an annual agreement.

The structure enables medical professionals to determine testing priorities according to clinical requirements rather than the expense of individual examinations.

Steve Roest, chief executive and co-founder at PocDoc, stated that cardiovascular disease continues to constitute one of the most significant health burdens affecting UK populations, although numerous instances remain preventable through timely identification and intervention.

Roeste outlined that the organisation’s objective involves expanding access to clinically verified health testing, making the process more readily available, practical, and economically feasible for the general public.

Through collaboration with Unity Health and eliminating per-test charges, primary care teams gain enhanced capacity to detect cardiovascular risk at earlier stages, offering more individuals the chance to address potential concerns at the earliest opportunity.

Thames Valley Integrated Care Board has designated cardiovascular disease prevention within rural populations as a key strategic focus.

The partnership seeks to transition towards a more preventative approach to patient wellbeing.

Each assessment generates results within minutes via smartphone application, with information subsequently transmitted securely to Unity Health systems through GP Connect infrastructure.

Both organisations intend to conduct joint programme assessment and release their conclusions to support broader implementation across additional healthcare settings.

The Thame Sheep Fair screening was provided without charge through PocDoc’s 100×100 Fund initiative, which underwrites one hundred community screening schemes annually throughout the United Kingdom.
