Extra tickets released for British Museum’s Bayeux Tapestry exhibition

Published on

The British Museum has announced the release of additional tickets for its upcoming Bayeux Tapestry display, which has already seen unprecedented demand since general admission opened last month.

The medieval artwork, lent to the London institution from France, is visiting the United Kingdom for the first time in almost one thousand years.

The piece measures 70 metres in length and is embroidered onto linen cloth.

It narrates the Norman Conquest of England and the circumstances preceding the pivotal Battle of Hastings in 1066.

Claudia Winkleman, a trustee of the museum and television presenter, appears in a promotional short film produced in partnership with Spacebar.

In the video, she portrays a recently appointed security worker who witnesses the Norman invasion of 1066 and the Battle of Hastings materialising as the tapestry is animated.

The production incorporates more than 30 historical reenactment performers and combines live-action footage with computer-generated imagery.

The presenter sprints through various museum galleries in an effort to control the mounting disorder before opposing forces collide within the institution’s main court.

Additional allocations for the January through March period will become available from the museum’s website on October 21 at 10am.

Bookings are restricted to a maximum of ten tickets per transaction, and admission is restricted to the individual named on the reservation as identification verification may be conducted.

Pricing tiers have been set at £33 for standard adult entry, rising to £36.50 for those selecting the optional donation scheme.

Young visitors under 16 years of age gain complimentary access provided they are reserved alongside a full-price adult ticket, with a cap of four child places per transaction.

Concessionary rates of £25 apply to visitors aged 16 to 18 in full-time education, individuals registered as unemployed, and those with disabilities.

National Art Pass holders can attend for £16.70.

The exhibition signifies the artefact’s return to Britain for the initial occasion since its original creation during the medieval period.

The work has been held at the Bayeux Tapestry Museum in Normandy since 1983 and will be returned to that venue upon completion of its ongoing renovation programme.

The item is being exhibited within Room 30, formally titled the Sainsbury Exhibitions Gallery, as the centrepiece of an extensive presentation anticipated to draw approximately 7.5 million guests throughout its ten-month duration.

The institution achieved its record single-day ticket revenue when initial general access went live last month, accumulating in excess of £2.4 million within the first twenty-four hours.

With ticket requests continuing to surpass availability, museum officials have confirmed that supplementary allocations covering the latter stages of the display will be made accessible at a subsequent date.
