Dame Emma Thompson, the acclaimed British actress who celebrated her 67th birthday earlier this year, was captured on camera this week working on a forthcoming Apple TV production in Oxford.

The double Academy Award winner earned her first Oscar for her leading role in the 1992 period drama Howards End and claimed her second for co-writing the screenplay adaptation of Sense and Sensibility in 1995.

Production crews were present on Wednesday evening, August 26, and again the following night, Thursday, August 27, with the veteran performer observed alongside fellow cast member Ruth Wilson near the historic Bear establishment on Alfred Street and close to the Radcliffe Camera, a prominent architectural feature belonging to Oxford University.

Reports indicated that filming preparations included modifying one of the street designations to Easterhill Avenue for the shoot.

Ruth Wilson, who is 44 years old, has built a considerable reputation through her appearances in the BBC crime drama Luther between 2010 and 2019 and the Showtime series The Affair from 2014 to 2018.

The actress previously collaborated with Dame Emma Thompson in the 2013 production Saving Mr Banks, which chronicled the creation of Mary Poppins.

The pair were present in Oxford for filming the second series of Down Cemetery Road, an adaptation derived from the literary works penned by author Mick Herron, also known for his Slow Horses series.

Set against the backdrop of Oxford’s storied academic environment, the initial season debuted on Apple TV on October 29, 2025.

The storyline follows a woman who engages the services of a private investigator following an explosive incident and the simultaneous disappearance of a young girl on the same evening.

The programme garnered positive critical response upon its launch, with particular praise directed toward Dame Emma Thompson’s contribution to the cast.

Production schedules for the upcoming season remain unconfirmed at this stage.
