A pair of animal enthusiasts are preparing to traverse the United Kingdom without spending a penny, all in aid of cat welfare causes.
Rachael Brown and Valentin Jann will depart from Oxford on 29 August for an audacious initiative reminiscent of a prison escape, drawing inspiration from the BBC documentary series Race Across the World.
The venture supports Cats Protection.
The duo intends to cover the maximum distance possible within a 10-hour window while completely abstaining from expenditure, depending instead on the kindness of strangers, acts of reciprocity, and public goodwill to facilitate their travels.
According to Ms Brown, the plan involves performing folk music for passing audiences, collecting contributions through donation containers, negotiating fares with transport operators, and securing free lifts from motorists.
Their progress can be monitored via social platforms, with contributions accepted through their designated JustGiving portal.
Having achieved their initial fundraising goal of £200, the couple has opted to extend their expedition to span 20 hours.
Should contributions reach £500, the pair will commit to a full 30-hour endurance challenge.
Ms Brown explained that the team operates entirely on a voluntary basis and depends entirely on supporter contributions.
All funds collected will be allocated toward sterilisation procedures, temporary foster care arrangements, and critical medical interventions for cats residing in Oxfordshire.
Cats Protection delivers fundamental support services for felines including Pluto, a juvenile cat aged 10 weeks who underwent a surgical procedure to excise a damaged eye at a cost of £500.
The Oxford & District division operates as a constituent element of Cats Protection, recognised as the premier feline welfare organisation in the United Kingdom.
The charity extends assistance to approximately 191,000 cats and kittens annually through its extensive network comprising 182 community-based volunteer groups and 31 dedicated cat facilities.
