The Didcot Railway Centre in Oxfordshire has announced plans to appoint a new manager six months after a leadership transition at the heritage attraction.
Clive Hetherington concluded his five-year tenure as chief executive on January 22, citing a restructuring of organisational authority.
According to his own account, the governance alterations would have hindered implementation of a strategic five-year plan that he considered essential to the charity’s prosperity.
Richard Varley, who chairs the Great Western Society that operates the centre, outlined that recruitment for a replacement museum manager will commence in September.
The incoming appointee will be tasked with overseeing the living railway museum while advancing a commercial strategy designed to secure the venue’s long-term financial stability.
The facility, situated adjacent to Didcot Parkway railway station, draws thousands of guests annually.
Visitors have the opportunity to experience rides aboard the centre’s steam locomotives, explore the expansive engine shed, and access the on-site cafe, museum and retail outlet.
Following Hetherington’s departure, the organisation confirmed that temporary management arrangements had been implemented.
A representative for the centre stated that he had provided valuable leadership during his five-year period, during which the entrance ramp was constructed to improve accessibility for all guests.
The coal stage and water tower underwent restoration work, educational programmes for schools were extended, and he contributed to organising the 4 Castles event in 2023 alongside arrangements for the Flying Scotsman’s visit in 2025.
The centre received a National Lottery grant totalling £3.7 million.
Subsequently, the venue has submitted an application for additional funding to facilitate restoration of the listed 1930s engine shed.
Varley indicated that should the Heritage Lottery Fund application prove successful, overseeing this restoration project would constitute a primary duty for the newly appointed museum manager.
