A waterways sports organisation based in Oxford has outlined proposals to enlarge its facilities beside the Thames amid growing demand for its services.

The Falcon Rowing and Canoeing Club operates from the Isis stretch of the River Thames near Meadow Lane and has submitted expansion plans to the city council.

The current training and vessel storage building was finished approximately three years ago.

The club serves multiple user groups, including adults, young people, casual participants, competitive teams and visiting organisations.

It also fulfils broader community functions such as coaching sessions, training programmes, outreach activities, local gatherings and sessions arranged with governing bodies and educational institutions.

According to the planning documentation, the existing building has enhanced these capabilities but simultaneously generated constraints on storage capacity and interior space.

The proposal has been developed to address requirements for additional boat storage, covered maintenance areas, improved kayak facilities and expanded upper-level accommodation for club activities.

The plans indicate that expanded capacity would safeguard the organisation’s capacity to support expanding youth and beginner initiatives while accommodating ongoing membership growth and serving both members and the wider community.

Should the application receive approval, the project would involve constructing a two-storey addition designed to match the existing structure, providing increased boat storage, training accommodation and a purpose-built kayak storage area.

The extension would feature an additional bay consistent with the current boathouse architecture.

The submission confirms that existing riverside infrastructure, including the boat launch area, trailer access route and Environment Agency maintenance corridor, would be preserved.
