Motorists travelling on the M40 in a southerly direction from junction 11 near Banbury towards Cherwell Valley Services are experiencing wait times of about half an hour.

A broken-down car is causing partial obstruction of the carriageway close to junction 10, with vehicles having to queue to get past it.

The AA Traffic News map illustrates where the incident occurred and shows the extensive tailback building up on the southbound carriageway.

Delays mounting

According to AA Traffic News, travellers are enduring severe delays of no less than 20 minutes past junction 11 near Banbury.

The backlog extends roughly three miles, with vehicles crawling along at roughly 10mph.

One lane shut

One carriageway has been cordoned off on the M40 southbound between junctions 11 and 10.

The stationary vehicle is occupying the lane and significant hold-ups continue on the route, currently standing at 22 minutes and increasing.

Both lanes now blocked

The situation is deteriorating as reports come in that a second carriageway has been closed, with wait times now reaching 30 minutes.

Both lane one and lane two are inaccessible to vehicles travelling southbound between junctions 11 and 10.

All lanes restored

The roadway situation has now been resolved and every carriageway on the M40 is operating normally again.

Only minor congestion remains on the A43 as it merges with the motorway at junction 10, Cherwell Valley Services.

AA Traffic News indicates a nine-minute delay for those approaching the junction.
