An 18-year-old from Tonyrefail has earned a place at Oxford University after overcoming considerable obstacles during his schooling.
Dylan McCarthy secured an offer to pursue experimental psychology at St Catherine’s College after obtaining four top A-level grades.
The young man, who was diagnosed with autism and ADHD when he was six years old, struggled significantly throughout his early academic years.
According to WalesOnline, Dylan was removed permanently from two primary schools before facing additional difficulties at secondary level.
By the time he reached Year 8, he had moved to a specialised Pupil Referral Unit designed to provide trauma-informed assistance for students between 11 and 16 years old.
His educational trajectory shifted when he sought to study A-levels at Coleg y Cymoedd.
College representatives stated that staff identified his capabilities early on and gave him the chance to pursue his studies at the institution’s A-level facility in Nantgarw.
The college noted that Dylan was among this year’s notable successes, having navigated substantial educational barriers before obtaining his position at the prestigious university.
College officials explained that his primary school years presented particular difficulties, leading to his permanent removal from two institutions.
They further indicated that his move into secondary education proved similarly challenging, resulting in his placement at a dedicated Pupil Referral Unit offering specialised support for young people aged 11 to 16 by Year 8.
During his interview at Coleg y Cymoedd, staff members observed his maturity, intellect and resolve.
Instructors felt confident in his potential to achieve, and their assessment proved accurate.
He subsequently achieved four A* grades at A-level and has accepted his place to study experimental psychology at Oxford.
His admission to St Catherine’s College means he will attend one of Britain’s most distinguished universities when his course commences later this year.
Dylan’s accomplishment contributed to what the college described as an impressive set of results for the year.
Coleg y Cymoedd reported an A-level pass rate exceeding 99 per cent, alongside solid outcomes across various vocational programmes.
The Nantgarw A-level centre, which provides courses in subjects such as biology, physics, further mathematics, English literature, geography and history, achieved a perfect pass rate.
Over 900 learners also finished Level 3 programmes in fields including health and social care, construction, creative arts, sport, computing and engineering.
Dylan’s achievement represents a striking transformation following the difficulties he encountered during his early school years, with the young man now getting ready to commence his studies at Oxford.
The college cited his journey as one of several remarkable accomplishments among this year’s student body.
