New experience quarter with motorsport track proposed at Bicester Motion

Published on

Fresh designs for a motorsport-themed driving facility at Bicester Motion have emerged following the lodgement of revised blueprints for an experience zone at the decommissioned RAF station.

Located on the 444-acre historic compound north of Bicester along Buckingham Road, the former airbase features numerous period structures currently undergoing transformation into functional workshops and commercial premises.

Approximately 50 enterprises already operate at the location, spanning automotive, motorsport and aviation sectors.

The scheme for the zone, now christened The Rushes, outlines how a portion of Bicester Motion could serve to demonstrate products and technology, with its surrounding circuit repurposed as an automotive track.

Three-level structures will establish what the documents describe as an energetic environment adjacent to the track.

The application, rubber-stamped by Cherwell District Council on 7 August, detailed that the development would encompass circuits and loops of varying lengths alongside a surface designed for low-friction exercises.

According to the documents, the proposed tracks draw inspiration from motorsport but are intended for driver instruction, cinematography, evaluation as well as display and encounter activities.

It outlines the circuit and structures as serving commercial, light manufacturing, warehousing, community, educational and event purposes, within a broader Bicester Motion scheme encompassing various constructions, residences and commercial ventures such as an airborne taxi hub.

The application described The Rushes as functioning as an energetic, customer-oriented venue where mobility and technology brands can exhibit their offerings and breakthroughs. Situated beside the experience tracks, it enables guests to interact directly with emerging mobility technologies through displays, experiences and participatory events. The space aims to deepen connections between brands and consumers while honouring the progression of mobility from historical inventions to cutting-edge developments.

It clarified that the present perimeter track dates from the 1940s expansion era when it linked the estate with an extensive network of dispersal roads extending to aircraft dispersal points, most of which have since disappeared.

Although the application represents a refresh of earlier experience zone proposals, planning documents maintain that the core approach remains unchanged.

According to the application, the experience tracks continue to offer the backdrop for display and immersive mobility pursuits, however The Rushes brings a more pronounced placemaking and destination orientation that more accurately mirrors the position Bicester Motion now holds as a mobility hub of national importance. The zone is destined to become the meeting point between innovation and public interaction, generating chances for visitors to discover both the heritage and tomorrow of mobility technology in a single setting. This development also solidifies connections between the different character areas throughout the estate. Companies established in the New Technical Site and The Ranges can utilise The Rushes as a platform to highlight emerging offerings and technologies, while visitors gain a direct link to the innovation occurring throughout the broader campus.
