Stowford House in Abingdon marked the 81st anniversary of Victory in Europe Day by creating a setting evoking the 1940s era.

The care home redecorated its building to capture wartime Britain, welcoming 11 servicemen from Dalton Barracks for the event. Employees and guests dressed in vintage attire and sang period songs throughout the afternoon.

Home manager Stephanie Jones said the home enjoyed a lovely time marking VE Day alongside residents and the British Army. She noted that allowing inhabitants, particularly veterans living at the property, to build meaningful relationships and share memories with the local community forms an essential part of life at Stowford House.

She added that the VE Day festivities gave everyone a ideal chance to exchange recollections of past times and contemplate the sacrifices made during the conflict. She expressed gratitude to neighbours who attended and to the staff who worked diligently to make the occasion memorable.

The event held special meaning for two residents.

Peter, a former Royal Air Force and military serviceman, recalled his recollection of simple Army uniforms and mentioned that many of his friends preferred joining the Royal Air Force over the Armed Forces.

Marjorie, whose brothers and sisters all served in combat roles, said she felt thankful that they all came home safely.

Local community members also savoured a traditional afternoon tea complete with freshly prepared cakes. Stowford House offers permanent residential living, nursing care, and specialised dementia support services.
