A helicopter was observed flying at low altitude above Oxford on Wednesday, with residents questioning the reason for its presence over the urban area.

Those in the western part of the city may have been surprised to notice an aircraft moving slowly and close to the ground during the morning hours on May 13.

Photographs documented the aircraft passing above the Osney Mead Industrial Estate around 11:30 am, showing off its vivid yellow exterior.

The aircraft is believed to belong to National Grid’s collection of vehicles, which are sent out periodically to examine the company’s infrastructure for any damage or problems.

This work involves inspecting towers, wires, poles, and overhead power lines, as well as surveying the system for concerns like overgrown vegetation and utilizing thermal imaging equipment to detect areas of excessive heat or electrical overload on the lines.

The presence of the helicopter does not automatically indicate a malfunction in the power grid, as these flights are commonly undertaken for routine maintenance and system inspections.
