A historic bakery operation that produced the renowned Banbury cakes for approximately four centuries has ceased trading.
Philip Brown managed Brown’s Original Banbury Cakes Limited for close to three decades, beginning his tenure in 1998, though he took over a far older family tradition of crafting and vending the distinctive pastries.
Banbury Cakes consist of petite puff pastries containing a rum-infused dried fruit filling, bearing resemblance to Eccles Cakes, and Brown’s Original Banbury Cakes had established renown for their production.
The family-run enterprise had maintained this craft for almost 400 years, operating from the well-known bakery situated at 12 Parsons Street since the 1600s.
The establishment that had long been a local favorite was torn down by a property developer in 1968 and subsequently reconstructed into retail units, presently occupied by a Japanese dining establishment.
Despite this, the Banbury Cake enterprise persisted.
From the beginning of the 1900s onward, the business was operated by two sisters named Lizzie and Lottie Brown, and Mr Philip Brown, who until recently served as the company’s baker, is the great-nephew of those women.
Mr Brown conducted Brown’s Original Banbury Cakes as a mail-order operation, distributing the traditional cakes via internet purchases and through retailers including the Banbury Museum shop and Wykham Park Farm Shop.
However, the longstanding enterprise was liquidated on April 7, 2026, according to records filed with Companies House, and was voluntarily removed from the register and terminated.
Mr Brown was unavailable to provide a statement.
Wykham Park Farm Shop confirmed that the enterprise had discontinued supplying Banbury Cakes earlier this year following the baker’s retirement and the company’s closure.
