Oxford is set to introduce new on-street bicycle parking facilities at various locations throughout the city, with work commencing on Monday, March 23. The initiative will transform a number of existing car parking spaces into secure cycling storage areas.

The following streets will see parking bay conversions:

Magdalen Road on its southern side will gain bicycle parking next to number 89, positioned north-east of the Sidney Street junction on the existing kerbed build-out, taking over from a two-hour shared-use motor vehicle bay.

Also on Magdalen Road’s northern side, a 5.1 metre stretch located south-west of the Hurst Street junction will be converted, replacing a current two-hour shared-use space.

On Boulter Street’s western side, a 7.2 metre section near numbers 17 and 19 will be transformed from permit-holder-only vehicle parking into cycle storage.

Leckford Place’s eastern side will accommodate a 4.8 metre cycle parking area situated 9 metres north of Plantation Road’s northern kerb line, substituting a two-hour time-limited vehicle bay.

Market Street’s southern side will see a 4.5 metre section installed 14.5 metres west of Turf Street’s western kerb line, an area currently designated for no waiting at any time.

Observatory Street’s northern side will feature a 6.2 metre section positioned 11 metres north-east of Walton Street’s north-eastern kerb line, converting a one-hour time-limited vehicle bay.

St Andrews Road on its northern side will gain a 4.8 metre cycling facility located 9 metres west of St Andrew’s Lane’s western kerb line, replacing a two-hour shared-use bay.

Wilberforce Street’s northern side will have a 4.8 metre section situated 28.2 metres east of Perrin Street’s eastern kerb line, substituting a three-hour shared-use space.

Those wishing to contest the Order’s validity must do so within six weeks beginning 16 March 2026.

Temporary road and footpath restrictions

Several temporary closures have been announced throughout Oxfordshire.

In Oxford, footpath number 320/57/30 will be shut to facilitate housing development works, with completion expected by 3 February 2027. This section connects the A40 heading northwards towards Stevenson Crescent. An alternative route exists via Fields Road, crossing the A40 and North Way to the south, and following the footpath alongside the A40.

Bayswater Road in Oxford will experience a continuous closure until 28 March to allow for delayed sewer improvement work. The closure impacts the stretch outside number 45. A diversion routes through Brampton Road, Burchester Avenue and Bassett Road, with additional signs marking the reverse direction.

Cardigan Street in Oxford will have a 24-hour closure from 13 April until 1 May. The restriction applies to the segment between Walton Street and King Street for electrical main overlay operations. A diversion will operate via Walton Street, Jericho Street and King Street, with access preserved for cyclists and pedestrians.

Restrictions on A44 Chipping Norton and Burford roads

Banbury Road on the A44 in Chipping Norton will be completely closed from 7 April until 27 April for sewer work. The closure spans the section between the A3400 roundabout at the Shell Garage and the entrance to Applegarth Nurseries Garden Centre. Speed limits throughout this area will be temporarily lowered to 20mph.

On the A361 High Street area in Burford, a full closure runs from 7 April until 13 April for pedestrian footway work at Windrush Bridge. The restriction covers the stretch between the A424 Fulbrook roundabout and the A40 Oxford Road roundabout. A diversion routes through Northleach and Stow-on-the-Wold.

Additional closures

In Abingdon, Winsmore Lane will be closed to through traffic from 6 April to 14 April for Openreach communications work. The closure operates between 8am and 6pm, affecting the section between 10 Ock Street and 16 Neave Mews. Access remains available for cyclists, pedestrians, emergency services and local traffic requiring entry to properties within the closed portion.
