MAFS relationship coach Mel Schilling dies aged 54 after cancer battle

Mel Schilling, recognised for her role as a relationship expert on Married at First Sight, has passed away aged 54.

The Australian television personality gained prominence as a dating coach on the reality programme and received treatment for bowel cancer during 2023.

A subsequent routine scan performed months afterwards revealed tiny growths in her lungs, which subsequently extended to certain areas of her brain, resulting in severe headaches and loss of sensation along her right side.

In a heartfelt social media update posted in March, she disclosed that the disease had been detected in the left hemisphere of her brain and medical professionals had informed her there were no additional treatment options available.

She stated then that during the previous two years, while production of the programme continued, she completed sixteen cycles of chemotherapy and subsequently learned she qualified for a pioneering targeted trial based on her genetic profile, scheduled to begin in March 2026. Her spirits lifted once more at the possibility of overcoming the illness.

However, over the festive season, she developed incapacitating migraines and experienced reduced sensation on her right side. Following extensive investigations, she was informed the malignancy had progressed to the left side of her brain, and despite further radiation therapy, her cancer specialists had exhausted all therapeutic avenues. Hearing that verdict altered everything completely.

She acknowledged that her spark was dimming rapidly, yet she remained present, still battling, and embraced by remarkable affection.

Her husband Gareth posted a statement on the photo-sharing platform confirming that Melanie Jane Brisbane-Schilling died peacefully today, wrapped in affection.

He revealed that in her last moments, despite assuming the illness had stolen her capacity for speech, she drew him near and breathed words meant for Maddie and himself that would sustain him forever. The effort required everything she had left, and that simple act captured everything about their beloved Melsie. Even at the end, her sole concern remained Maddie and him.

Devotees of the programme posted their sympathies in response to the announcement, with one admirer expressing how devastated they felt and extending heartfelt condolences.

A former contestant on the Australian edition, Nicolas Jovanovic, offered his respects with a message of peace. Fellow relationship specialist Natalie Russell conveyed her shock and sorrow, offering thoughts and prayers to the family. Former United Kingdom participant Hannah Norburn shared her heartbreak for the entire family, describing her as a wonderful extraordinary person who would be deeply missed yet fondly remembered.
