A wildlife collection in Oxfordshire has revealed plans to cease operations almost five decades after first opening its gates to the public.

Heythrop Zoological Gardens, which operates under the name Amazing Animals and is located near Chipping Norton, confirmed it would be ending activities at the conclusion of March.

The purpose-built facility, which served as a filming location for productions requiring animal actors, was established in 1977 and has grown to become one of Britain’s foremost centres for training and providing exotic creatures to the entertainment sector.

Beyond their professional work in television and cinema, the establishment’s animals have delighted members of the public during special open days and when visiting educational establishments, residential care facilities and various community venues.

Representatives from the organisation stated that the choice to wind down operations had received considerable deliberation, and expressed gratitude to supporters for their compassion and assistance throughout the years.

They noted satisfaction at having been able to offer visitors experiences including animal interactions, collection tours, open events, celebrations and junior wildlife sessions.

Staff also reflected on journeys to numerous care residences, hospices and medical facilities, describing how their animal handlers were consistently touched by the joy these encounters generated among recipients.

The organisation said it had taken great pleasure in interacting with both visitors and hosts, and in witnessing the delight shown when people met the animals.

Well-wishes were extended to all involved as the facility prepares for its final chapter.
